Is online gambling illegal?
This is a touchy, but often asked question. In many countries such as Australia, online gambling is legal without restriction.
In other countries such as Sweden, the Bahamas, or the United States there is
prohibitive legislation. Also, you must be 18 or older to gamble
online. We advise you to check with your country and state legislation to
see where you fit. Also, some casinos will police what country you are
from and may restrict you from playing.
The United States: In the United States, the issue is still debated. Although Internet casinos are not allowed to operate in the US, the majority of online gamers are from the US. Currently, there are no clear laws that say online gambling in the US is illegal, but the issue is being debated and future legislation may affect you. Some things to keep in mind are:
1. The 1960 Wire Act prohibits placing wagers over the phone - some interpret this to mean that gambling over the Internet is also illegal.
2. The Internet Gaming Prohibition Act tries to control companies that run Internet casinos, but it still doesn't say anything about restrictions on the casino visitor. The funny thing about this proposed legislation is that it would only apply to US Internet casinos and the majority of Online Casinos & Sportsbooks are located offshore.
3. To this day, no one in the US has been charged with online gambling.
