BE SURE TO
UNDERSTAND THE RULES
OF THE GAME.
Remember, Craps is a simple game. You bet on or against the numbers
or number combinations rolled on a pair of six-sided dice.
Here are a few things to keep in mind to maximize your
winnings:
- It is impossible to have a betting edge over the casino. Period.
- The people you hear in the elevator saying “I only lost $[fill in
the blank]” are right. You are paying to be entertained. Enjoy the
ride.
- Every wager you place, whether it’s with a casino, a bookmaker or a
club, has a built-in edge that favors the house by as much as 20%.
Conversely, of course, you are disadvantaged to the same degree.
- Write on the back of your hand in indelible ink: “No system can beat
a house advantage.” In a game of skill, practice, clear thinking and,
in a few situations, systematic play can improve your odds, but in a
game of pure chance like Craps, there is no system that can help you.
- The house advantage cannot be overcome by magic potions, voodoo or
ESP. In the short run, however, it is possible to enjoy a run of
luck.
- Winning streaks and losing streaks happen by chance. Don’t read
anything in to them. If you’ve reached your limit on losses or goal
for winnings, quit. Because of the house’s edge, the longer that you
play, the surer that you will lose.
- A run of luck always runs out. The odds on every toss remain the
same. A particular throw is not more or less likely to occur if it
has not happened for a while.
- Stay alert. Never play when tired. And never, never drink and play.
- Have a game plan. Make the decision to stay or quit be yours.
- Keep records and set goals and limits. Always know how far ahead or
behind you are.
- Follow your game plan. When you’re winning, leave the game when you
reach your target. If you’re losing, resist the temptation to recoup
with “one more bet.” Financially speaking, live to fight another day.
- Don’t spend more than you can afford. A rule of thumb is to have
enough cash to cover 25 losing bets. Pick a table where the minimum
bet is within your plan.
- Place small wagers until your playing with the casino's dough.
- After you've built up your kitty, increase your bets slowly according
to your plan.
- Don’t increase your bets to recoup your losses. You’ll just be out
of the game sooner. Stick with your plan.
- Look for the smallest house edge. There are a few wagers where the
house advantage is less than 1.5%: take odds on your pass line, don’t
pass line, come, and don’t come bets. Conversely, center table
proposition bets can suffer a house advantage of up to 20%. Avoid
them like the plague they are.
- Keep it simple. A pass line bet with two come bets is enough action
for anybody.
- Don’t listen to exhortations of the dealers. The house wants you to
play until you lose.
- Keep your eye on the dealers. They won’t cheat, but they do make
mistakes.
- Never leave a hot table until you’ve met your goals.
- Pick up your winnings. If you leave your money on the table, three
wins followed by a loss is just a loss.
- Be polite. Don’t gloat when you win or whine and pule when you lose.
Keep hands and drinks (soft drinks, or course) out of the way.
- Quit according to your plan.
